Spiro Getting Ready for the Future
November 3, 2015
“As a parent, it’s very difficult to send a child to school who cannot communicate, so we’re so thankful that Spiro loves going to Elim each day. His happiness shows us that he is being treated well and is loved there.”
Spiro has been a member of Elim’s family for six years and is enrolled in our Crossroads program. A huge Blackhawks fan and a lover of classical music, Spiro enjoys being active. At Elim, he spends his day out in the community, swimming with his classmates, and learning vocational skills that help increase his independence.
We are so proud to see how far Spiro has come! When he first came to Elim, Spiro struggled behaviorally and wasn’t able to participate in a lot of classroom activities. We first introduced Spiro to the Essentials programs where he learned production skills by participating in assembly projects. As Spiro’s skills grew, it was obvious he was ready for a new challenge! Now, Spiro participates in a wide-variety of on-campus jobs, working alongside his classmates in the cafeteria and cleaning Elim’s buses. Spiro is obviously proud of his work, and he loves making a contribution!
Spiro’s parents and teachers are excited for his future. His classroom teacher says, “We’re training Spiro to become more independent so he has more options when he graduates from Elim’s school. Spiro is capable of doing a variety of different vocational skills and tasks. We’re excited to keep watching his skills grow!"
While Spiro’s parents have been so proud to see their son’s hard work pay off, they are also very grateful for the support Elim provides. “The staff at Elim has been wonderful and open to our family,” his mom explains. “They have been a lifesaver to our family. We love Elim!”
