Candice Makes a Difference

March 1, 2013

Recently, a group of adults from Elim’s Adult Services program distributed HOPE Packs to children in need in Englewood, Illinois. While all of the adults participating in the event understood the value of their work, Candice spoke repeatedly throughout the day about how much she loved handing out the kits. At one point, she stopped another volunteer and exclaimed, “I can make a difference!”

This is just one of many things that makes the HOPE Packs program unique. Think about it: finding meaningful work for an adult with disabilities can be challenging. HOPE Packs not only provides work, but it is work that puts our Elim adults in the position of being the “helpers.” Their work helps other people in need. It’s so gratifying to see their enthusiasm and to realize, as Candice did, that they truly can make a difference. Liz Drogos serves as Candice’s case manager at Elim and knows the impact that HOPE Packs has made on her. “Candice has such a strong heart for other people. She’s extremely intelligent and has an extensive vocabulary. She loves being at Elim because HOPE Packs and Elim’s service learning projects give her an opportunity to help others.”

Through HOPE Packs, Elim’s adults have an opportunity to earn a paycheck by packaging school supplies into kits called HOPE Packs. These packs are then distributed to children in Chicago and worldwide through partnering relief organizations. In addition to helping others, the greatest benefit of HOPE Packs is the renewed sense of self-esteem experienced by adults served at Elim.

You can help! When you run an easy program like HOPE Packs in your church, you multiply the impact of your church's ministry, and you make it possible for everyone in your church to get involved.
