Engaging his Community Important to Chris

To see Chris smiling and playing catch at the local recreational center, you’d never guess that he previously struggled with going into the community. A two-year member of Elim’s adult autism program, Chris is a friendly and quiet man, who communicates mainly through gestures.
Elim’s staff eased Chris’s transition into the community in several ways. Because Chris has difficulty when riding on Elim’s bus, an Elim staff member transported him in a minivan. Chris first travelled to a local golf course to work on vocational tasks with a group from the autism program. Next, our staff brought him to the recreational center.While he did not participate the first visit, he played catch with Elim’s staff on his second outing.
Erica Malone, an instructor in the adult autism program, believes in the importance of community involvement for Elim’s adults. “Our adults travel into the community every day,” she explains. “As Chris gets more comfortable, we will encourage him to try new things like vocational projects or playing basketball.”
