Blessing Others – Adults with Disabilities Serve at Homeless Shelter

Elim’s adults are using their gifts to feed the hungry. Serving at Daybreak Homeless Shelter in Joliet, Illinois, our adults feed up to one hundred people at the shelter each month.
“Elim’s adults are not just helping – they are in charge,” Elim instructor Kristin Young explains. “The job could not be completed without them. We have to remember the individuals being served have fallen on hard times and are usually very hungry. Some are rough and demanding. Others are grateful for what we’re doing. It’s a beautiful thing for our adults to be in a place that values their support.”
Mary enjoys volunteering. She works hard at her job at Daybreak and always serves with a positive attitude. During her last visit, Mary spent time slicing cheese, assembling sandwiches, and handing out watermelon slices. No matter what her task, Mary served with a smile because she knew she was helping others!
The Daybreak Shelter is thankful for the efforts of Elim’s adults.
Because they are the only team serving at that time, they are relied upon 100%. The shelter’s staff encourages and coaches them through difficult situations. At the end of their service time, they sit together to enjoy the meal that they served others. This gives them time to build relationships, laugh together, and talk through the day’s joys and challenges.
Elim’s Adult Services program emphasizes the importance of building relationships, both on our campus and in the local community. Through service-learning, our adults bless others and have lives filled with meaningful opportunities to worship God and serve others!
