Peter Gains Work Skills for the Future
November 3, 2015
Elim’s CORE (Computer and Office Readiness) program is a specialized component of Elim’s Crossroads school program for students preparing to graduate. The CORE program prepares students by equipping them with office and work-related skills that will prepare them for life after graduation. CORE not only teaches physical vocational skills but it also teaches the importance of work ethic, flexibility, and adaptability.
“Peter does so many different things in Elim’s CORE program. He loves to take attendance, make deliveries, work on the computers, stuff envelopes for mailings, and send out emails,” CORE program supervisor Ashley Smallwood explains. “Peter works so diligently that I have to keep adding new challenges for him. He’s a huge help in the CORE environment, and he has learned so many work skills that will help him in the future.”
When Peter first came to CORE, he did best with a lot of staff support, prompting, and praise to stay on task. He’s grown so much that he now completes his tasks with little supervision and is even helping train his peers. Recently, Peter was so proud to teach his friends how to make copies with the copy machine. He loves reading to others and helping Elim’s staff.
Peter has come so far that our staff believes he’ll be ready to work independently at an on-campus job next year. With Peter’s determination and new vocational skills, we can’t wait to see how God uses him after graduation!
