Those grateful and enthusiastic words were written by 5th and 6th grade Humboldt Community Christian School Discovery Center students, Gabriel and Dominic. Humboldt Community Christian School added an Elim Discovery Center in the late 1990s and joins a network of Discovery Centers across the country. Elim’s Discovery Centers allow students with learning difficulties to receive individualized academic assistance and testing within their own Christian school.

 

The Humboldt Discovery Center is currently providing academic instruction and speech therapy for their students. Several boys are currently visiting the Discovery Center to learn because they struggle with learning disabilities. Debra Flores, principal at the school, explains why the Discovery Center has been such a blessing for their school. “The Discovery Center is designing the curriculum around the ways these students learn best. The students and parents are so pleased.  It’s a cycle. Their academic scores go up and their confidence quickly goes up, too. Once their confidence goes up, they realize they can do it, and then their scores go up again.  The Discovery Center allows them to learn the same content as the other kids their age and be part of their regular class.”

 

Using Elim’s resources, Discovery Centers in 20 partner schools are meeting the needs of well over 500 children with learning disabilities.
